Philpott dam for flood control
Concrete gravity dam at Bassett, Va, 219 ft high, built for flood control of Smith river which discharged 37,000 cfs during flood in 1937; completed structure will contain 320,000 cu yd concrete; flake ice, chilled water and cool air are used to lower temperature of concrete in mixers; dam will build up net head of 152 ft for generation of power by two 6700-kw units.
