Vertical relief wells reduce uplift on Sardis and Fort Peck dams
Excessive uplift pressures at downstream toe of both dams alleviated by installation of vertical drainage pipes that go deep into substrata to collect free water; spiral steel wound perforated wood stave pipe was joined into 40-ft length and centered in 24-in. casing, then gravel was placed around pipe as casing was withdrawn.
