Numerical studies of unsteady dispersion in estuaries
One-dimensional mathematical model is developed which describes longitudinal concentration distribution of pollutant in estuary; importance of including tidal velocity in advective term of mass balance equation is emphasized; unsteady equation for concentration distribution is solved by implicit, finite-difference technique on digital computer; difference in magnitude of longitudinal dispersion coefficient in salinity intrusion region and in fresh water tidal portion is described; modification of Taylor's dispersion equation is presented; mathematical model is applied to upper portion of Potomac estuary.
