Problems associated with construction of 35 km subway network in Mexico City consisting of three lines, intersecting in center of city that is built on old lake bed, surface of which consists of volcanic ash and silt, but meter or two below is soft, soggy layer of clay which is 85% water; clay strata extends to depth of nearly 100 ft; clamshell is issued to excavate section between walls, working around cross braces which prevent cave-ins.
