Numerical procedure is developed to minimize factor of safety with respect to shape of sliding body; results obtained, except for some cases, generally confirm reliability of established procedures using circular sliding surface; critical shapes are presented and new data are compared with that obtained from conventional slip circle analysis; results are expressed in concise dimensionless form.
