Behavior of nitrogen in transformer steel during heat treatment
In investigating variations of nitrogen content during high-temperature annealing, it was found that nitrogen content increases by factor of 1.5 to 2 during retarded heating to 600 to 800 C when annealing steel in nitrogen; this has unfavorable effect on texture formation during subsequent rapid heating; holding at 700 C leads to appearance of many aluminum nitride inclusions, which coagulate during slow heating at 700 to 900 C; holding at 900 to 950 C completes this coagulation, which improves electromagnetic properties.
