Early hardening of asphaltic binder in bituminous pavement mixtures
Hardening rates of asphaltic binder in several bituminous pavements were measured during first 30 days of pavement life, by changes in penetration and viscosity; effect of rate of cooling of bituminous sample on hardening was studied; for some pavements, hardening in first four to ten days of pavement life was equal to, or greater than, hardening that occurred during mixing; compacted pavement specimens stored in air at 10 F, or under water at room temperature, hardened less rapidly than those stored in air at room temperature; importance of time-temperature history of samples for determining hardening results is emphasized.
