Filling system for lower granite lock
Located on Columbia-Snake River, Washington, lock dimensions will be 86 ft wide by 675 ft usable length; it will have 105 ft of lift; bottom longitudinal system as developed for Lower Granite lock appears to offer reasonable compromise between empirical designs in use in United States and dynamically balanced systems developed in France; compared to previously constructed lateral systems it offers advantages of faster lockage time, reduced hawser forces, greater safety against misoperation of filling valves or emergency use of single valve.
