Hydromechanical theory of connected vessels is used to derive equations for filling of single lock from head race, and for filling of coupled mutually adjacent lock chambers; formulas are obtained for filling time, rate of level increase in chamber, and magnitude of maximum water flow for cases of filling cross sections that are constant or varying in time.
