Underwater inspection of test fill in Gatun lake
SCUBA diving and underwater photography were found useful in analyzing test fill built on submerged muck foundation in Gatun Lake section of Panama Canal; problem was to determine depth to which natural structure of muck foundation will be destroyed by dumping of rock fill for large earth and rock fill dam; results indicated need for protective blanket of graded rock to be constructed below main fill, and for special barge dumping methods that will prevent loads from falling as integral masses on foundation.
