Spalled concrete traced to conduit
Exposed concrete grandstand at new Washington, DC, stadium has been developing spalls and cracks in ramps, concourse floors and ceilings with aluminum conduit; many cracks display cleavage in concrete surface as well as longitudinal separation characteristic of temperature and shrinkage cracks; cause of corrosion is galvanic action set up by contact between reinforcing steel and aluminum conduit; controversy on question whether presence of calcium chloride, or other salt, is required in concrete to cause hazard, or whether it exists without it, is reported.
