Control of rock surrounding gate-roads
Research on rock movements and stresses affecting supports in roadways along which coal is being mined successively on both sides; roof subsidence can be considerably reduced by increasing rigidity and load-bearing capacity of roadway protections; use of yielding supports with correct resistance to yield reduces maintenance costs; use of prestressed yielding supports produced no marked reduction in subsidence of roof; bolting floor over entire width of roadway proved ineffective.
