Newport bridge
1765 ft long cable cantilever bridge over River Usk at Newport is believed to be first of its type in Great Britain; 500-ft welded steel main span is suspended by cables passing through hollow concrete towers at each end and fastened to anchor spans of road viaduct; one special feature of bridge is unusually shallow depth of center span, which is only 4 ft 6 in. at center line.
