Newport Bridge foundations
Design and construction of foundations for Newport Bridge crossing 11,248 ft over Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island which includes suspension bridge with center span of 1600 ft and two side spans of 687 ft each, as well as various truss, plate girder and prestressed concrete stringer spans; area is overlain with silty sand containing little gravel; rock formations are medium to hard shale; because of great depth of water at tower piers, floating caisson type of construction for foundations was considered too costly; alternative design, employing hollow pier structure with walls and footings of structural concrete poured by tremie method and supported on steel piles penetration deep into Bay bottom, was adopted.
