Design for Calder motorway bridge
Design by G.Maunsell and Partners in collaboration with architect, J. G.L.Poulson, is one of two judged to be of equal merit in British competition; extent of works was limited to area between two points about 475 ft apart on centerline of motorway, outside which roadway will be carried on embankment; motorway crosses river at skew angle of about 400 on horizontal radius of 3015.57 ft and on gradient of 1 in 248; minimum clear span of 176 ft measured square and 226 ft on skew was specified; twin bridges are structurally separate, with space between spanned by slabs forming central reserve; material is prestressed concrete; diagrams. (see also Engineer v 217 n 5636 Jan 31 1964 p 203-6, n 5637 Feb 7 p 262-4)
