Long, single-span arch bridge solves problem for autoroute
Single-span fixed arch design to carry Laurentian Autoroute extension in Quebec over highway; arches have interaxis of 40 ft which will allow 2 lanes of 14 ft each, and 5 ft sidewalk on either side of roadway; arches have free span of 226 ft at base, and center elevation of 50 ft; width of arch is constant 4 ft, but thickness decreases to 2 ft 6 in. at its summit; deck is concrete-slab on steel; galvanized suspension cables are capable of developing tension of 133 tons at breaking point.
