Approximate method of analysis of orthotropic bridge slabs is presented which enables stresses to be obtained directly without usual need for intermediate deflection calculation; method uses principle of least work, in conjunction with assumption that bending and twisting moments and shear forces in plate may be represented by power series in chord-wise coordinate, coefficients of series being functions of spanwise position only; by expressing strain energy in terms of redundant functions and minimizing energy integral by calculus of variations, set of linear differential equations in required functions is obtained, together with complete set of boundary conditions for solution of problem.
