Method of widening adopted because of shortage of labor and scarcity of steel forms; basically method consists of trenching to width 6 in. outside of final edge of widened pavement; stepped construction used in placing bituminous concrete. (See also Eng News-Rec v 134 n 2 Jan 11 1945 p 56-60)
