Difficulties in driving 3-mi Leadville, Colo, drainage tunnel are recounted; numerous fault zones, carrying water under 180-ft head, traversed with extensive use of concrete lining carried along with excavation, concrete bulkheads containing drainage systems, guniting, grouting, and probing ahead with test holes; hot water in grout mix counteracted 37 F temperature groundwater and oats were included to seal off small cracks while grout set.
