Influence of rock-pressure effects on tunnel linings is described; effectiveness and reliability of new method consisting of thin sprayed concrete lining, closed at earliest possible moment by invert to complete ring, deformation of which is measured as function of time until equilibrium is obtained; tunnels in various countries in construction of which new method was applied successfully are described; test tunnel was constructed in Austria to investigate subject; value of rock deformation measurements in determining thickness of lining is stressed. (See also n 11 Nov 1964 p 453-7, n 12 Dec p 511-15)
