Earthquake response of yielding structure
Hysteresis law governing class of yielding structures suitable for earthquake response studies is presented; class includes linear, elastoplastic, and bilinear hysteretic structures; from examination of equation of motion for one degree of freedom structures of this type, it is found that ratio of earthquake acceleration strength to yield level of structure measures relative magnitude of excitation; typical yielding structure is subjected to ensemble of artificial earthquakes; results include averages and ranges of values of displacement spectra, energy input spectra, relative quantities of energy dissipated by yielding and viscous damping, and permanent set.
