Failure of Tacoma bridge, U.S.A.
Short description of bridge based in main on article by C. H. ELDRIDGE indexed from Civ Eng (NY) May 1940, under heading Bridges Suspension -- Tacoma, Wash; in relation to very high span-to-width ratio there has been steady tendency in American suspension bridge design to increase this figure, while increasing sag ratio of main cables and decreasing rigidity in stiffening trusses; this action has resulted in transference of relative weight from truss to cables.
