In construction of 11.3 mi highway in outskirts of Livingston, conventional methods are used, but unusual system to bring embankment material to specified 14% moisture; cut areas are covered by light weight aluminum 6 in. and 3 in. pipe carrying 570 gpm water to 100 sprinkler type irrigation head; sprinklers work 400 hr to penetrate 50 ft depth and then are moved to new sections; prewet cuts loaded, hauled and compacted by conventional equipment.
