Presplitting technique cuts blasting problems
On 4.5 mi stretch of four-lane highway near Marathon, NY, shale and sandstone formation was presplit with presplit and production holes drilled to 30-ft bench level simultaneously and blasting done in two lifts; holes 3-in. diam were drilled 36-in. c to c at slope of 1.5 on 1 primed with two 2×16 in. DuPont Toval dynamite and deck loaded with 1.25×8 in. 1/2 lb sticks of DuPont 40% special gelatin C; production holes were filled 6 to 7 ft from top with ammonium nitrate and 6%-by weight of No. 2 diesel fuel oil.
