Use of foamed plastic in highway construction
Foamed polystyrene was used experimentally to replace costly gravel base course and to act as insulating layer beneath bituminous pavement of Trans-Canada Highway; thermocouple equipment was installed to measure temperatures at various points throughout test section; success of experiment resulted in utilization of form for insulation of subsoil beneath dual multiplate culvert; foam layer has thus far prevented frost penetration beneath culvert.
