Britain seeks to cut road costs by slip-forming
Experiments designed by Road Research Laboratory are first scientific investigation into slip-form paving; tests are conducted on Cromwell By-Pass in Nottinghamshire at speeds of 3 to 3.5 ft/min; wet lean concrete base gave "q" values of 19 to 46 dependent on length tested; aggregate-cement ratios ranged between 18 to 1 and 12 to 1 with 15 to 1 as average; Cromwell Mk. 111 found best form for joints, is welded assembly which can be erected quickly in front of slip form paver by mounting in sockets preset in base; tests and results comparing economics of reinforced and unreinforced concrete on pavements, designed to have equivalent performance.
