Improvement of navigability of Columbia river by dredging and construction works
Paper reviews work performed between 1957 and 1961; information is based on hydrographic surveys of river; use of permeable groins and dredged sand in redirecting river and improving channel depths on one bar is reviewed; use of advance maintenance dredging to guarantee availability of project depth all year, rather than just after completion of dredging, is considered; success of this program in obtaining greater channel depths on year-round basis is reviewed; several problems bearing on maintenance of this navigation project are presented.
