Study of the Impacts of Reduced Dredging Procedures on the Navigability of the Upper Mississippi River
A 5-mile reach of the Upper Mississippi River beginning at the Wabasha, Minnesota, bridge was selected as a test site by a joint panel of Corps, Coast Guard, and towing industry personnel. This particular reach was chosen because there were three sites in close proximity that have channel maintenance problems requiring frequent dredging. It begins just below the confluence of the largest source of sediment on this portion of the Upper Mississippi and is subject to the proposed reduced dredging procedures. While these reaches required turns and careful maneuvering, these maneuvers should not so dominate the navigation of the reaches as to cover up any effects of the channel dimension changes. In addition to the changes in channel dredged depths, concern was also expressed about a trend to reduced widths from shoaling of the backwater areas.
