Homestake project's Rocky challenge
Water diversion network of dams, tunnels and pipe lines on up to 32% grade slopes to 10,000 ft elevation in Rockies requires blasting of 3 million cu yd of rock; coyote holes 3.5×5 ft and 150 ft long to Y for 30 ft are loaded with 375 tons of Dupont powder, yielding 700,000 cu yd; drills vary; drillers are protected against rock falls by safety cages made of tunnel rib supports and sheet steel; Homestake will have flexible asphaltic membrane on upstream face used in place of impervious zone; membrane, 14 in. at bottom and 7 in. thick at top, has three horizontal joints of tapered and bonded asphalt; design and equipment details.
