Expanding-bolt seam-tester was developed which provides quick and satisfactory method of measuring strength of coal on face; assessment of overall strength of face can be made in one shift; if more detailed information of variation from point to point along length of face is required, tests made between eight and ten shifts should provide ample information; this method of measuring face strength is sensitive to overburden pressure and to cleating in coal.
