A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
New Detroit parking garage provides three below-grade parking levels; foundation chosen was caissons, some straight and other belled, extending down to hardpan at 120 ft; certain caissons are belled for two reasons -- to satisfy allowable bearing pressure, and to counteract uplift pressure; post-tensioned tendons tie belled tips of caissons to thick concrete mat which serves as floor of bottom level; during excavation, soil berm about 45 ft wide and 20 ft deep was left around edge of hole, after first 15 ft had been removed; this helped with lateral support of steel sheet piling, and acted as ballast along perimeter where uplift was greatest.
