Foundation problems at Bhakra dam and their treatment
Bhakra Dam, 740 ft high is located in outer foot-hills of Himalayas in Northern India; dam is gravity type massive concrete structure; geological strata at dam site consist of alternate beds of massive calcareous sandstone and claystone, which dip about 70° downstream and trend roughly at right angles to river; shear zones, minor faults and extensive joining are common features in bed rock; elaborate foundation treatment was carried out to make site safe for high dam; bed rock was excavated carefully to sound rock and consolidated by grouting before placing concrete; intermediate and deep grout curtain and drainage holes have been provided.
