Record grout curtain seals Nile's leaky bed
Aswan High Dam is defended against seepage by grout curtain, drainage wells and horizontal clay blanket; drill rigs were used to make rows of grout holes 16 ft apart, to produce impermeable curtain; grouting was done from bottom up; curtain is 835 ft deep, 1640 ft wide, begins in lower 96 ft of dam and tapers from 130 ft thickness to 16 ft in bedrock; injection system includes sleeve grout in hole to force horizontal flow.
