Earthquake resistant design of Oroville dam
Construction of embankment dams in seismic environment; designers of Oroville Dam, located on Feather River in Northern California, were conscious of earthquake problem and exerted unusual effort to ensure that embankment was capable of resisting forces likely to be imposed by major earthquake; model studies indicated that, immediately after construction, effect of earthquake stronger than most severe one recorded in California to that time would be confined to minor slumping at embankment crest; condition which is readily provided for by sufficient freeboard.
