Foundation Studies for Meadowbank Buttress Dam
Meadowbank Dam is 43 m high massive buttress dam founded on sandstone and mudstone; in rock there were numerous near horizontal breccia zones or flat lying fault zones, which contained matrix of material of clayey-silt size classification; these zones provided mode of failure of dam by sliding; buttress blocks had factor of safety against sliding of 1.1, but this was increased to 2.0 at foundation level by use of inclined prestressing cables; factors of safety against sliding at lower levels in rock were also investigated, and prestressing force was provided to bring them to acceptable values.
