Effect of earthquakes on arch dams
Finite element methods are used to calculate natural frequencies and mode shapes of single-curvature and double-curvature dams; calculated frequencies and mode shapes are compared with results of model tests; response of two particular dams to three well-recorded earthquakes is considered; it is concluded that method of modal combination proposed by Merchant and Hudson is satisfactory for arch dams; displacements and stresses produced by three earthquakes on two dams are also calculated and, it would appear that displacement and stress responses of about 1.4 times hydrostatic may be expected if strong earthquake occurs within 50 mi of dam.
