Water jets excavate narrow fault seams that are concreted and prestressed with rock layers to stabilize dam abutments
High-powered water jets were used to wash away material from fault zones in bedrock for dam abutment; after voids are filled with concrete, fillings and sound rock between are prestressed 260 ft into mountain sides; test run was made with water cannon which shoots 530 gpm at 1430 psi to sluice out fault seams between good rock in dam abutment; access tunnels drilled into rock at about 41-ft levels allow cannon to shoot up 17 ft from bottom of tunnel and another to shoot down 17 ft from top to clear 33-ft lift; concreting was done in 33 × 33 ft lifts.
