Cathodic protection of copper in severely corrosive soil
Laboratory procedure in developing electrical requirements pertinent to cathodic protection of copper; work was prompted by severe corrosion of copper tubing used underground at housing development; soil environment was reported as having low resistivity (about 200 ohm) and high concentration of sulfate ion; specimens of same type of copper tubing, one arranged to corrode freely (control) and other under cathodic protection (cathode), were exposed in laboratory to sample of soil for period of 130 days; polarization data obtained on control were used to evaluate cathodic protection simultaneously applied to cathode; after 130 days specimens were removed from soil and cleaned; cathode was well protected, metal loss being less than 3% of that of control which was almost perforated in few places.
