Crack propagation in plain concrete
Hypothesis for fracture of concrete is presented; initial cracks exist in cement paste matrix and at matrix-aggregate interface; propagation of existing cracks in plain concrete is influenced by properties of cement paste and aggregates; fracture toughness is expressed as stress intensity factor for region near tip of existing crack at onset of rapid crack propagation; experimental investigation formed part of study and was designed to provide evaluation of hypothesis; results indicate that concretes with typical coarse aggregate contents have approximately 20% greater resistance to crack growth than mortars with similar water/cement and sand/cement ratios.
