Ultimate load capacity of prestressed concrete columns
Results of analytical study on load carrying capacity of rectangular prestressed concrete columns with hinged ends; effects of concrete strength, steel percentage, slenderness ratio and eccentricity on strength of columns are investigated; comparison is made between strength of prestressed concrete columns and that of reinforced concrete columns; results indicate that advantage of prestressing lies with slender columns subject to loads with large eccentricity; design procedures proposed are similar to current design method for reinforced concrete columns in that strength of short columns is modified by capacity reduction factors to account for effects of slenderness ratio and eccentricity.
