Erie Canal originated in need for west-east commerce in early 1800's; its construction provided first United States practical school of engineering; at time Canal was labeled America's greatest engineering feat; Canal was key factor in making New York nation's first seaport city; Canal itself contains one of highest-lift series of locks; series of improvements have continuously expanded system's freight-carry capacity; views of canal life, by 19th century writers, are given; system's importance as freight carrier has declined, but its use for water recreation has increased; Erie Canal has been designated National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by ASCE.
