New Quebec bridge will span hard luck site
Located about 6 mi upstream from Quebec, near Chaudiere's confluence with St. Lawrence, new bridge will parallel 50-yr-old highway and railroad bridge, just 650 ft east; bedrock is overlaid with densely packed boulders; north pier foundation is designed as large mass of tremie concrete placed in excavation inside braced steel sheet piling cofferdam; south tower foundation is designed as open-well concrete caisson; bridge will have center span of 2180 ft and side spans of 617 ft each, suspended 150 ft above river by 24-in.-diam cables consisting of 10,600 strands of 3/16 in. steel wire.
