Proposed Akashi straits bridge, Japan, compared with other great suspension bridges
Comparative analysis of existing suspension bridges and of proposed bridge between Kobe City and Tokushima City and going through Awaji Island which lies between these two main islands; required length of bridge main span is 1300 m and foundation depth 50 m; conventional American-type bridge structure and novel British bridge structure are discussed; special structural features for this new long-span bridge are indicated which if used will begin new era in bridge building.
