Plastic cable covering introduced on California suspension bridge
Bethlehem Steel Corp and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co have developed plastic covering system to protect main cables of suspension bridges; first application on Bidwell Bar Bridge near Oroville Dam, Calif, has been completed successfully; glass-reinforced acrylic-resin system was adopted as practicable means of providing color-fast, durable, economical, and completely water-tight covering; new covering requires no painting and is virtually maintenance-free; application must be well planned and carefully carried out, with final resin compounds mixed as needed since they have "pot life" of only 20 min; time required for this first application was about three fourths of that estimated for conventional painted wire wrapping.
