Novel features in Tasmania's Batman bridge
Cable-stayed 1400 ft bridge has orthotropic deck and single 320 ft high leaning A-frame cable tower; 1400 ft. bridge has main span of 675 ft across Whirlpool Reach, side span of 180 ft on west bank and four continuous viaduct spans on eastern shore; three viaduct spans will be 135 ft long, fourth 157 ft; "A" frame support tower leans at 20° from vertical over river and is carried on pin bearings on west bank; made up in sections 34 ft wide and 11 ft long, decking is welded together to form one continuous length; joints receive X-ray and ultrasonic test to ensure there is not risk of failure.
