Batman bridge nears completion
Construction of bridge over Tamar River in Tasmania with its unusual leaning A-frame cable support tower; bridge is cable stayed steel truss structure with main span of 675 ft across Whirlpool Reach, continuous with side span of 180 ft on west bank and connecting through sliding bearing to four continuous approach viaduct spans on eastern shore; poor foundation conditions on eastern shore caused suspension of main span by cables from A-frame tower, founded on dolerite rock of western shore; 320 ft high tower leans out over river at angle of 20° to vertical, resting on pin bearings at its base and tied back to abutment anchorage by pair of backstays terminating at top of tower.
