Melbourne's lower Yarra bridge will be Australia's biggest
Cable-stayed steel structure has main span of 1102 ft and spans of 472 ft 6 in. and 367 ft 6 in. on either side; long curved approaches, in 220 ft spans of prestressed concrete will bring total length of crossing to 7722 ft; at its highest point, 116 ft wide deck will be 190 ft above water level; form of bridge was influenced by navigation clearance requirement; type of bridge selected has two single control towers with cable stays anchored at center of deck structure; towers are about 150 ft high above roadway and they taper in both directions from 8 ft square at base to 6 ft square at top of column; main member is trapezoidal-shaped hollow box girder 49 ft wide at base, 26 ft wide at top and 12 ft 6 in. deep.
