Modern techniques and problems in restoration of Marlow suspension bridge
Suspension bridge over River Thames at Marlow, with main span of 227 ft, was built in about 1830 and refloored in 1860; severe corrosion of anchorage ironwork and failure of number of suspender rods necessitated reconstruction of superstructure; high-tensile steel bars, provided to carry chain tension to rear of anchor blocks, were pretensioned to prevent cracking of front ends of blocks; 6300 sq ft area of deck was surfaced with lightweight gritted epoxy resin, and has rubber filled expansion joints; expansion rollers of chain bearings were protected with encasement of expanded pitch-polyurethane, believed to have been first application of this new technique.
