Strengthening Marlow bridge
How preservation of 130-yr old suspension bridge at Marlow, England, was undertaken with minimum disruption to traffic; bridge consisted of two masonry towers, constructed of Bath stone arched across at each end; from these, two tiers of four single-link chains formed suspension structure; temporary timber roadway was erected, 4 ft 6 in. above existing decking; erection started in center of bridge and worked in both directions outwards; it was supported on tops of cross-girders suspended from old upper chains so leaving lower chains and cross-girders free from any loading; lower chains and cross-girders were dismantled, latter from barges used to provide working platform for erection of deckplates.
