Contractor beats difficult problems in building breakwater
Description of breakwater construction on north coast of Tasmania; difficulties encountered on exposed coast subject to frequent storms; dredging during 21 shift wk; erection of 3500 ton caissons 100 ft long by 50 ft wide and 55 ft high comprising outer 1 1/2 ft thick concrete shell with 9 in. thick intermediate concrete walls cutting them into 21 interconnected compartments; caisson base was 3 ft thick; detailed description of caisson manufacture, storage problems, and work at sea; construction operations are illustrated.
